Abstract

Medicine originated in primitive age from human efforts to get out of sufferings and to control external stimuli or accidents. Medicine has gradually developed in accord with the development of human culture in general, and has been under the influence of the trend of thought of the times.
In the reign of King Sejong when general culture was most developed in Chosun dynasty which succeeded Koryeo dynasty, marvelous development was achieved in the sphere of medical science, and the rearrangement and pigeonholing of Chinese medicine laid the foundation for the establishment of Korean medicine.
The compilation of Donguibogam (Handbook of Korean Medicine) by Huh Joon in Kwanghegun period helped make a turning point for the development of our national medicine, and opened the era of documentary medicine based on scientific theory breaking from empirical medicine. The compilation of this medical handbook also exerted an important effect on Chinese and Japanese medicine.
Under the circumstances of relying on Chinese medicine, pharmaceuticals (drugstuffs) produced in China were very expensive and hard to obtain, and further more the remedial effect was not good because the climates of Korea are different from. those of China. So, in the beginning of Chosun dynasty, various researches on local pharmaceuticals were conducted. Through the process of these researches and the compilation our unique medicine and independence in medical field were performed.
